Explanation of Terms Used on This Site

This help guide provides information necessary to assist users in understanding the terminology used on this web site.


  1. Absconder - An offender who is currently present in the community and being supervised by the NC Department of Adult Correction who has avoided supervision and cannot be located.
  2. Admission Date - The date on which an offender was received at an NC Department of Adult Correction prison facility to begin serving their sentence as an inmate.
  3. Admitting Location - The NC Department of Adult Correction prison facility where an offender was received to begin serving their sentence as an inmate.
  4. Alias - A assumed name by which an offender is known that is different from their legal name.
  5. Committed Name - The name reported to the NC Department of Adult Correction for an offender on judgment documentation provided by the court at the time of conviction.
  6. Commitment - An individual event whereby an offender must either serve time as an inmate in an NC Department of Adult Correction prison facility, or serve time in the community being supervised by the NC Department of Adult Correction.
  7. Commitment Type - The type of sentence for which the offender was committed to the NC Department of Adult Correction by the court system. If INMATE, the offender was committed to serve a sentence as an inmate in an NC Department of Adult Correction prison facility. If PROBATION/PAROLE, the offender was committed to remain in the community and be supervised by the NC Department of Adult Correction.
  8. Control Status - A status that ranks the degree of inmate restriction within a prison facility. Restrictions are imposed to maintain security in the facility, as well as to protect both the inmates and the facility personnel. Possible values, in order from the least restriction to the most restriction are:
    1. REGULAR POPULATION
    2. PROTECTIVE CONTROL
    3. ADMIN. SEGREGATION
    4. INTENSIVE CONTROL
    5. MAXIMUM CONTROL
    6. OUT OF CELL RESTRICTION
    7. HIGH SECURITY/MAX CONTROL
    8. DISCIPLINARY SEGREGATION
  9. Conviction Date - The date on which the offender was convicted in a court of law of his/her crime.
  10. Crime Type - The type of an offender's convicted offense. If FELON, their offense was a felony type, if MISD., their offense was a misdemeanor.
  11. Current Location - If the offender is currently serving a sentence as an inmate in an NC Department of Adult Correction prison facility, this is the name of the facility where they are currently located. If the offender is currently present in the community and is being supervised by the NC Department of Adult Correction, this is the name of the county where they are currently located.
  12. Custody Classification - A classification that ranks the degree of inmate custody in terms of facility security. Custody classification directly determines the type of facility where an inmate can be placed.
  13. Detainers - A writ authorizing the further detention of a person in custody, pending further action. Several reasons why a detainer might be placed on and inmate are 1) to await deportation proceedings, 2) to await new charges to be filed, or 3) to await being extradited to another state.
  14. Offender Number - A unique number assigned to an offender by the NC Department of Adult Correction that identifies an offender.
  15. Escapee - An inmate who has escaped from an NC Department of Adult Correction prison facility.
  16. Escapes - Indicates that the inmate has escaped from an NC Department of Adult Correction prison facility at least once.
  17. Incarceration Status - The current status of an offender who is currently serving a sentence as an inmate in an NC Department of Adult Correction prison facility. Possible values are ACTIVE, INACTIVE, and TEM.ABSENT (inmate who is currently outside the prison).
  18. Inmate - An offender who is currently serving a sentence as an inmate in an NC Department of Adult Correction prison facility.
  19. Inmate Status - The current status of an offender who at one time served a sentence as an inmate in an NC Department of Adult Correction prison facility. Possible values are ACTIVE, CONVERSN (data from prior system conversion), INACTIVE, and PAROLED (inmate who has been released).
  20. Interstate Compact Offender - An offender who is currently present in the community and is being supervised by the NC Department of Adult Correction for a crime for which they were convicted in another state, or is being supervised in another state for a crime for which they were convicted in North Carolina.
  21. Last Infraction Date - The last date on which the inmate committed a disciplinary infraction.
  22. Last Movement - If the offender is currently serving a sentence as an inmate in an NC Department of Adult Correction prison facility, this is the description of what occurred the last time the inmate was in transit to or from an NC Department of Adult Correction prison facility. Reasons could include transfer to a different facility, being received at the transfer facility, release from prison, etc.
  23. Last Movement Date - The date on which the inmate's last movement occurred.
  24. Legal Name - The name by which an offender is known on a birth certificate, marriage license, or a court order for name change.
  25. Maiden Name - The name by which a female offender was known prior to marriage.
  26. Next Control Review - The next date on which the inmate's control status will be reevaluated.
  27. Next Custody Review - The next date on which the inmate's custody classification will be reevaluated.
  28. Nickname - An informal name by which an offender is known.
  29. Number Of Infractions - The number of disciplinary infractions (facility rule violations) an inmate has committed.
  30. Offense - The official name of a crime for which an offender has been convicted. These names are determined by state statutes (laws) and may be shortened for display purposes. Examples of commonly seen offenses with shortened names are 1) AWDW -Assault With A Deadly Weapon, 2) AWDWWIKISI - Assault With A Deadly Weapon With Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury, 3) POSS WITS SCHEDULE II -Possession With Intent to Sell A Schedule II Controlled Substance.
  31. Previous Location - If the offender is currently serving a sentence as an inmate in an NC Department of Adult Correction prison, this is the name of the last facility where they were located. If the offender is currently present in the community and is being supervised by the NC Department of Adult Correction, this is the name of the last county where they were located.
  32. Primary Crime - The most significant crime of all the crimes the offender was convicted of for which they are currently serving their sentence.
  33. Probation/Parole Status - The current status of an offender who at one time was present in the community being supervised by the NC Department of Adult Correction. Possible values are ACTIVE, and INACTIVE.
  34. Probationer - An offender who is currently present in the community and is being supervised by the NC Department of Adult Correction.
  35. Punishment Type - A punishment category that indicates whether the offender's sentence was influenced by the North Carolina Structured Sentencing guidelines, as well as what guideline standard was used.
  36. Sentence Number - A unique identification sequence for the sentence associated with a criminal conviction. Sentence numbers that begin with 2 letters are prison sentences, and sentence numbers that begin with 2 numbers are probation/parole sentences.
  37. Sentence Type - A category that indicates the type of sentence that was imposed on the offender. There can be up to 6 sentence types associated with each unique sentence number.
  38. Special Characteristics - A general category of inmate. Possible values are:
    1. COMMITTED YOUTH OFF. - A youthful offender committed to serve a sentence in an NC Department of Adult Correction prison facility
    2. COURT RECOM WORK REL - An inmate who participates in a court recommended work release program
    3. DEATH ROW - An inmate serving a death sentence
    4. IMPACT - An inmate participating in an IMPACT program (a youthful offender program that is no longer in operation)
    5. LIFE - An inmate serving a life sentence
    6. PAROLE VIOLATOR - An inmate serving a sentence for which they were previously given parole, but violated the terms of their parole release
    7. PRE-SENTENCE DIAG. - An inmate who has been committed to the NC Department of Adult Correction for a pre-sentence diagnostic evaluation
    8. REGULAR - An inmate with no special incarceration characteristics
    9. SPLIT - An inmate who is serving a split sentence
  39. Split Sentence - A sentence served by an offender where they serve a portion of their sentence in jail or prison before being placed on probation with a suspended sentence.
  40. Total Incarceration Term - The sum of all of an offender's consecutive sentences to be served in an NC Department of Adult Correction prison facility in years, months, and days.
  41. Total Supervision Term - The sum of all of an offender's consecutive sentences to be served in the community being supervised by the NC Department of Adult Correction in years, months, and days.
